Woodworking experiments? Help!?

I have a coffee table rather than a woodworking project. I need to come in and conduct experiments on the wood piece. ie, the surface is best on wood? Other ideas would be most welcome

Can you try methods on scrap wood? For example, what gives you the best results with sandpaper degree (for example) Shellac? Is there a scraper or sandpaper or sanding block better results? With the grain, against the grain, random orbit? How do you get the wood to dye evenly? Do you need a sanding filler? First layer of shellac? Does it make any difference whether you use water-based stain or alcohol? Or try simply different surfaces – shellac, french polish, Varnish, polyurethane, spray, brush, rag …
