Career change for a chemist?

I'm a PhD chemist with experience in coatings (paints), inks, and colorants, but have become a little disillusioned with the mainstream chemical industry. Any thoughts on new things I might try? I enjoy being extremely hands-on, both in the chemistry lab and away from work. I enjoy woodworking and furniture refinishing, as well as pretty much anything having to do with home repair and improvement (though I'm not at the "contractor" level.) I'm also very "outdoorsy". What can I do to that incorporates all my interests and experiences? I know I have not given you much to go on, but I've always been amazed by the answers I've read here in the past, so I'm looking forward to reading what people suggest! Nothing is too crazy! Thanks!

It does not sound like you are tired of being a chemist and I assume that you are making good living as one, so I would not advice rocking the boat. I have seen some mid-career level professionals started a "second job" in contracting / consulting in their field of interests during their down time from work – which include evenings and most weekends. The second job did not feel like a great demand because they have real passion for it, and sounds like you do as well. Some people even take a bit of step back in their career (lower pay or level) so that their day jobs Do Not Demand as much time and allow them to pursuit Thus their other interests. Some people even built up sufficient businesses to eventually quit their day job. Sounds like you have lots of options Whether work with someone else or starting on your own. Lawn care, construction, volunteer as camp leader For or Humane Society to build houses, etc. As long as you have the security finance the World is Yours to explore. Here is an article from a recent issue of Money Magazine hope to stimulate some thoughts. http://money.cnn.com/galleries/2007/moneymag/0702/gallery.live_your_dreams/index.html Best wishes.

Since you found this site, you must enjoy working with wood. And if you’re like me, you’ve probably spent hundreds of hard-earned dollars on wood plans and projects that turned out to be disappointing (or maybe even disastrous!). Maybe you’ve halted projects in mid-stream because of frustration or from running out of ideas. To read more, please click here:Woodworking4Home
