Trying to get into woodworking.?

I’m thinking about getting into woodworking. I’m mostly interested in building tables, coffee tables, end tables, and book shelves.

I’m looking for a good resource that will point me in the right direction by telling me what supplies I need as well as teach me some of the basic skills.

To some extent, the supplies depend on the approach you prefer – traditional hand crafting requires different tools than modern factory techniques, so you may want to spend some time exploring the various approaches.
Here are a few sites with some free lessons, videos, and plans.
There’s some stuff available free on the ‘Fine Woodworking’ website.

There’s some available on the ‘Popular Woodworking’ website, too – scroll down to the ‘free instructional videos’ section.

You may also find the ‘Woodtreks’ site interesting.

There are also some woodworking shows on PBS – your local library may have or be able to get copies of some for you. If you want to see examples of extreme opposites, look for ‘New Yankee Workshop’, where the host tries to avoid using hand tools, and ‘The Woodwright’s Shop’, where the host never uses power tools. You will also probably find a number of books on furniture-building and cabinet-making at your library.
Enjoy!

What you have to note before buying a Woodworking Book

Since you found this site, you must enjoy working with wood. And if you’re like me, you’ve probably spent hundreds of hard-earned dollars on wood plans and projects that turned out to be disappointing (or maybe even disastrous!). Maybe you’ve halted projects in mid-stream because of frustration or from running out of ideas. To read more, please click here:Woodworking4Home
